3 amazing things about Scotland (so far)

Hi there Reader,

Adapting to new places has always been exciting to me. I seem to naturally look for what's good. The silver linings. The little things that make a place feel like home.

I hope you're doing well wherever you are, where home is, and that you're soaking up every bit of summer goodness.

Here are 3 things that amaze me so far...

  1. The strawberries here are incredible. Honestly, they taste as though they've already been sprinkled with sugar. They don't need a thing. They're that sweet. Every time we buy them, I'm amazed.
  2. And then there's the scent of summer. Wherever there's a patch of grass or a stand of trees, whether in a city park or out in the countryside, the air is filled with the sweetest fragrance. It's warm, green, and almost impossible to describe. Even the smallest strip of grass tucked between buildings can release that beautiful smell. It catches me by surprise every time, and I never get tired of it.
  3. Summer here has surprised me in another way too. Most days are only in the 60s, yet somehow it feels much warmer than that. Unless you're standing along the North Sea with the wind blowing, of course. But when the sun comes out, it feels wonderfully strong. Bright. Almost intense.

The light is different everywhere in the world, and Scotland has its own kind of magic. I notice it every day. And then there are these long summer evenings. It's still light until nearly 11 o'clock at night, even though August is almost here. I know the days are getting shorter, but for now, I'm enjoying every single minute of it.

Darina Neyret 20th of August Hi Reader, ↓ There is a process that needs to happen when you move to another country. At first, everything is exciting. The streets are different. The light is different. Even the grocery store feels like an adventure. You are looking at everything with fresh eyes, thinking, I really did this. And then, somewhere between figuring out the bins and trying to understand why everything works slightly differently than you expect, the other thought arrives: What the...

Fallingwater, PA

Darina Neyret July 14th Hi there Reader, ↓ I’m writing this from Scotland, weeks after standing in front of Fallingwater. Yea. Pennsylvania. I’ve started this piece more than once. Each time the words felt too small for what I wanted to say. Some places really need you to think about how you experienced them before trying to explain them. Fallingwater was one of those places. I needed time. Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece doesn’t simply sit beside a waterfall. It hovers above it, suspended...

Hello Reader! I think we left off in Palm Springs… We spent a lovely night there and headed out early the next morning, hoping to beat the desert heat. We didn’t quite succeed. It was well over 100 degrees on the drive to Sedona, with our trusty little Honda Fit packed so full there wasn’t an inch to spare. Odom drove the first stretch while I watched the endless wind farms roll by, those giant white blades slowly turning against the bright desert sky. There’s something mesmerizing about...
